Furthermore, the waiting times to speciation /\nextinction may be scaled in different parts of the tree,\nmeaning we can simulate trees with clade-dependent\ndiversification processes. At a speciation event, one species\nsplits into two. We allow for two different modes at these\nsplits: (i) symmetric, where for every speciation event new\nwaiting times until speciation and extinction are drawn for\nboth daughter lineages; and (ii) asymmetric, where a speciation\nevent results in one species with new waiting times, and\nanother that carries the extinction time and age of its\nancestor. The symmetric mode can be seen as an vicariant or\nallopatric process where divided populations suffer equal\nevolutionary forces while the asymmetric mode could be seen as\na peripatric speciation where a mother lineage continues to\nexist.
